primi piatti

A menu item that kept standing out at several of the restaurants in Cape Town was the Mimosa pizza. Since we equate Mimosas with champagne and orange juice on Christmas morning, we thought it would have slices of orange on it. It was actually made of three normal ingredients (mozzarella cheese, bacon, tomato) and one unorthodox one (banana!). We were very hesitant to try it. We took the plunge at Primi Piatti, a relaxed restaurant/bar on this beach. Apparently, banana is quite a popular pizza topping in South Africa. We totally get the appeal. The bananas weren't too sweet and were balanced by the saltiness of the bacon. We'd absolutely order this again if we get the chance.

{P.S. We're going to NYC and heard that you can find a good pie there -where should we grab a slice?}

  1. Go to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn (it's right by the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO). It's definitely the best. There's always a line, but it's worth the wait. Also, Lombardi's is great. It's been featured on the Travel Channel as the best pizza in NYC (though I've always heard/thought that Grimaldi's is). That one is located on Spring St. between Mulberry and Mott. And if you like Rice Pudding, it's across the street from a place called Rice to Riches. DELICIOUS. Hope this helps! :)

  2. I'd leave off the bacon, but the bananas sound fantastic! I love pineapple on my pizza. Have a safe flight to NYC--my fave city in the world!!!

  3. Yep, go with Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. It is fantastic and our favorite. Kefi in Greenwich Village is also really good and serves Sicilian style pizza.

    When are you going to be in New York?

  6. Thirding Grimaldi's in Brooklyn! When I read you wanted recommendations I yelled Grimaldi's out loud all alone in my apartment. I'm moving back to NY this weekend and I am SO EXCITED to be able to grab some real pizza again.

    I say get your pizza to go and sit in the little park by the bridge. It's a great view and if it's a nice day you'll get a good combo of people watching and water watching. Also there's a not bad ice cream place that hand-makes their ice cream with all natural ingredients right down the street- I forget the name but you can't miss it if you head down the street towards the water.

    Another fun thing to do in NYC is the Coney Island Sideshow and depending on when you're going to be there, the Mermaid parade is in early June.

  8. Skip Grimaldi's - it's for tourists. If you're in Brooklyn, go to House of Pizza & Calzone on Union Street between Columbia and Hicks. Absolutely delicious.

  12. Banana on pizza? That sounds interesting! I love when culinary experiences can be surprising... that rarely happens these days anymore with all kinds of fusion cooking. I'll have to give it a try. :)

    Everyone's got a favourite pie in NYC, it seems, but I never visit the city without eating (pie or pasta) at Gaetana's, in the West Village. The vodka sauce is to die for. It's well worth it.
