big bang • 10 comments • The Big Bang exhibit opened at the Montreal Museum of Fine arts a few weeks ago so we went to check it out. The exhibit consists of 16 installations by several visual artists. Arguably, the strangest installation was a room full of stacked plastic lawn chairs, somewhat pretentious but still kind of cool - maybe just because it's so absurd. My favourite was the room with several bean bag chairs that you could sit in to admire the floor-to-ceiling murals. (I didn't snap any photos, but there are some good ones here). I also loved Jeannot Painchaud's installation entitled Souffle et reminescence. Videos, that looked like holograms from a sci-fi movie, of dancers, gymnasts, and trapeze artists were projected on large panels in a dark room with eerie music playing in the background. The exhibit is on now through to January 22nd and if you're in Montreal you should definitely have a look for yourself.
biodome • 17 comments • Last weekend we took a trip to the Biodôme de Montréal. It's the largest natural science complex in Canada (along with the Insectarium, Botanical Garden and Planetarium - places we hope to visit soon). It's been a while since we hung out with penguins, and they seemed friendly - swimming up to the glass when we'd touch a finger to it. Places like this are such an amazing educational experience, but I can't help but feel a little bad for the animals. Who knows though, maybe they're all thrilled to not have to survive the wilderness. Anyway, these are just a few of the hundreds of animals we saw in several different simulated ecosystems, including a birds of prey exhibit.
around montreal • 16 comments • Walking around this city, especially the Old Port, on the weekend is one of my favourite things to do. These pictures are from awhile ago, right before it became too chilly to go outside without a coat. Christmas music is already playing in the stores and I'm still trying to hold on to autumn. One day I'll get used to this whole season changing thing (hopefully right before we move somewhere with a perpetual summer). For now, I'm pretty happy here... as long as I can get away for a chunk of the winter. - Mina
arcade fire + kid koala • 11 comments • It's been over a month since Arcade Fire played a free show at Place Des Festivals. I found out, a few days prior to the show, that a DJ I loved while I was in high school would be opening. I was excited to see both Kid Koala and Arcade Fire in one evening (...and some French band that I don't remember the name of). These are some snapshots of the crowd and the show that drew over 100,000 people. - Mina
