alex and a penguin

Last weekend we took a trip to the Biodôme de Montréal. It's the largest natural science complex in Canada (along with the Insectarium, Botanical Garden and Planetarium - places we hope to visit soon). It's been a while since we hung out with penguins, and they seemed friendly - swimming up to the glass when we'd touch a finger to it. Places like this are such an amazing educational experience, but I can't help but feel a little bad for the animals. Who knows though, maybe they're all thrilled to not have to survive the wilderness. Anyway, these are just a few of the hundreds of animals we saw in several different simulated ecosystems, including a birds of prey exhibit.

  1. I totally hear you! The bidome used to be my favourite place to go in Montreal… but now with a little age and perspective, I find it difficult to be okay with these animals living in a man-made and man-controlled environment. But maybe I am just one of those wonky vegetarians who over-cares. Sigh. I can't manage the zoo here in San Diego, either—it's too sad!

  2. Jasmine - It seems like they put in a lot of effort to make the "ecosystem" as realistic as possible here... so, I guess, at the very least, it's not as bad as those tiny rusted zoo cages.

  3. I'm not a fan of zoos and caged animals either, however from an educational standpoint places like this can be a good thing. I went to this biodome when I was 13 on a school field trip. I thought it was really cool at the time, since I had not yet experienced much of anything outside the environment of my own backyard.

  4. Gorgeous photos, but like you (and a couple commenters) have said... I just feel too bad for the animals and avoid going to places like this. Seeing captive birds who can't fly (very far) is one of the saddest things..
