blueberry doughnuts

In our entire 6 year relationship we can't recall ever eating doughnuts together. We both worked in an office setting, which meant that there were an abundance of pastries in the lunchroom on a weekly basis. As tempting as those stale doughnuts are, they never really appealed to us. That's why when one of our readers suggested that we check out The Doughnut Plant, we put it toward the bottom of our list of priorities. Luckily, it happened to be located in the Lower East Side, where we were meeting friends, so we figured we'd go with an open mind because you guys have never given us a bad suggestion. We are now converts.

Crammed into the tiny store was a line of about 20 people, waiting for their fix. You could tell many had been there before, judging from the look of anticipation on their faces. Waiting in the line gave us the opportunity to hear what everyone else was ordering. The blueberry seemed to be a popular choice, but we skipped it in favour of something more exotic. You could see the constant turnover of all the different flavours. You'll literally get a doughnut right out of the oven. After much debate, we settled on Mango and Crème Brûlée (which actually had a perfect crème brûlée filling) . It was quite difficult to resist buying one of each kind. The main 'culinary' difference between these doughnuts and the kind you'd get at coffee shop, is that all the glazes at Doughnut Plant are made with fresh seasonal fruit and ingredients ...and you can taste it.

  14. Ooooh, they look delicious! The doughnuts they have here in Germany are terribly un-tasty. The other baked goods are wonderful.... but the doughnuts, just not worth the calories!

  20. Space Astronomy If by lame, you mean delicious, than I would have to agree.

  21. Oh, I'm sure they were delicious. I have no doubt.

I just don't know why there needs to be an upscale version of everything. Doughnuts are supposed to be kind of stale and disgusting. It's part of the appeal, you know?

    What's next, gourmet cigarettes?

I'm not judging you guys for eating these fancy doughnuts or anything, I'm just opposed to the concept of fancy doughnuts in the first place.

  22. Space Astronomy - I just noticed that I wrote 'than' instead of 'then'. Oh the shame.

You're not supposed to eat the dozen day olds that you buy at the stroke of midnight for a dollar. They're reserved for throwing, control yourself.

    ...and aren't cigars gourmet cigarettes?

  24. These look super excellent! Here in Austin, I get my delicious doughnut fix at Gourdough's, which you should definitely check out some day. You can top your doughnut with anything! I like fudge and grilled strawberries with fudge oreos, but I've also heard good things about fried chicken with maple butter? Strange happenings. Keep Austin weird (:
