cold hollow cider mill • 12 comments • Cold Hollow Cider Mill was our favourite stop in Waterbury. We may have gone there twice during our 3 days in Vermont . It was actually my first time drinking apple cider; the perfect fall beverage, I think. We've mentioned that we usually don't care for donuts, but these cider donuts were unbelievable. It makes such a difference when they're hot and fresh. After enjoying our snack, we perused the mill (to see the cider-making process) and the gift shop. The prices were reasonable, so we stocked up on maple mustard (sooooo good). I also bought a little sampler pack of pumpkin butter/cider jelly/maple sugar, etc... Oh, and the apple cider BBQ sauce that we've been using for pulled pork sandwiches is the best. The views from behind the mill are gorgeous, too. I can't wait to go back someday. - Mina
doughnut plant • 24 comments • In our entire 6 year relationship we can't recall ever eating doughnuts together. We both worked in an office setting, which meant that there were an abundance of pastries in the lunchroom on a weekly basis. As tempting as those stale doughnuts are, they never really appealed to us. That's why when one of our readers suggested that we check out The Doughnut Plant, we put it toward the bottom of our list of priorities. Luckily, it happened to be located in the Lower East Side, where we were meeting friends, so we figured we'd go with an open mind because you guys have never given us a bad suggestion. We are now converts. Crammed into the tiny store was a line of about 20 people, waiting for their fix. You could tell many had been there before, judging from the look of anticipation on their faces. Waiting in the line gave us the opportunity to hear what everyone else was ordering. The blueberry seemed to be a popular choice, but we skipped it in favour of something more exotic. You could see the constant turnover of all the different flavours. You'll literally get a doughnut right out of the oven. After much debate, we settled on Mango and Crème Brûlée (which actually had a perfect crème brûlée filling) . It was quite difficult to resist buying one of each kind. The main 'culinary' difference between these doughnuts and the kind you'd get at coffee shop, is that all the glazes at Doughnut Plant are made with fresh seasonal fruit and ingredients ...and you can taste it.
