kids of khayelitsha

We visited one of the largest townships in Cape Town and we'll be posting about experiences, in Khayelitsha, over the next few days. All of the children were so excited to follow us around, asking us to taking photos and then demanding to see the camera screens. It seemed like some of the girls had been watching too much Top Model because they were actually posing for the cameras. The kids especially liked Alex and one little boy wouldn't let go of his hand the entire time we were there.

  20. Your photography is definitely improving over the course of the trip.

Also, one of the previous commenters said: "Do you guys think that maybe those black children thought you were gods or something?"

Holy motherfucking shit. Are you serious? It's not like Alex and Mina wandered into some jungle and stumbled upon a lost tribe untouched by modern man for millenia. Obviously these kids didn't think they were "gods."

  21. These photos brought tears to my eyes.
    Those children are so beautiful!
I've made a few trips to rural Mexico in the past five years and the children always manage to steal my heart.
Just like these kids, they loved my digital camera and once asked to borrow it from me.
I stood outside their house (also a very small shack like the ones in the post above this one) and waited for them.
When they returned three minutes later, I found photos of their prized possessions like their shared bed and their stuffed animals, against a lot of dirty, empty space.
It was both heartbreaking and incredibly touching.
We were there to build homes for families - to change lives.
But I often think of those kids and how much they changed my life in the span of one week.
    Pretty impressive.
    :]
