Hong Kong Street Food
• 2 comments •There's something badass about people who have iron guts and are able to make their way through countries sampling the local fare from vendors on street corners. It's their sense of adventure that I admire. The fact that they don't care if they may die is cool, I guess... in the same way that smoking sometimes looks cool as long as you don't think about how truly revolting it is. I worry I come off as a street-food snob, but I'm truly envious of those who can tolerate it. I have a weak stomach and just looking at some of these images again makes me queasy.
Alex and I have a long and tumultuous history with street food, having had some of the most incredible and unique meals and drinks from people we could barely communicate with but also days where we were shaking in bed wishing someone would put us out of our misery. Dramatic? Maybe. If you've been there, you know what I'm talking about.
I can't help but glance at the health scores when checking out places on yelp, and I wonder how these street spots would fare if inspected. As with most things, I can see both perspectives: Accountability and safety is important but also... "I'm here for a good time, not a long time" Thoughts?

P.S. We didn't eat at that bakery, but were curious about it when we returned and looked it up. Here's a good blog post about it if you're headed to Hong Kong and want to be more intrepid than we were. Bon Appétit!

I had those bad stomach pains before after eating street food and I certainly learned my lessons. I just try to be more picky on what I sample on the street. You have to protect your health first :)
ReplyDeletei know street food is probably not that promising when it comes to cleanliness and health but i can't help it! every time i get to visit hk, i just can't stay away from their street food. i don't eat all hk street food per se but i do love their egg waffles and those fried meatballs! fortunately i did not experience stomachache at all (maybe because i don't binge on them everyday? Lol but i did that often during my trip to hk though)
