friet met mayonnaise

Whenever we are in the vicinity of the Netherlands, I'm on a mission to find street fries with dutch mayo. I first discovered it while visiting one of my friends, who was studying in Rotterdam, and then introduced them to Mina when we went to Amsterdam last year.
If you're North American, you might be as disgusted with the thought of dipping french fries in mayo, as Mina was. But it's one of those 'don't knock it 'til you try it' situations. This mayo isn't your chemical-laden Miracle Whip. It is smooth, rich, and paired well with the Belgian "friet".
Perhaps the locals go elsewhere for their fries, but 'Belgian Frit'N Toast Resto-Snack' was in the centre of Brussels and provided us with a little energy to traipse around the city for the rest of the day. - Alex

Wow, that really looks great.
ReplyDeleteI'm really curious now about what that tastes like.
I want to buy myself some of that great mayo.
I've missed you guys! I love French Fries. I, like Mina am a little grossed out about the mayo! But I'm not knockin' it. I'd totally try it if I ever get the chance!
ReplyDeleteMmmm I've always wanted to try these.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds and looks delicious!

Yum. We like mayo with our fries in Scotland and also on our pizza. I hadn't realised it was weird until I married an American.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds absolutely rancid. Mayo is the Great Satan of condiments.
ReplyDeleteOh you're making me miss those delicious fries! We have brought the tradition of mayo and fries back with us to Canada, so good!
ReplyDeleteYUM!! I love Pommes Frites with mayo!!! Hope all is lovely! xo Oh and love the photos!
ReplyDeletei hear that mayo is WAY different and so delicious! i definitely would try that while there if i got the chance!
ReplyDeleteI am so hungry right now, those french fries are to die for. I want some!

Oh my goodness! I had this on my trip to Amsterdam in 2003! I was disgusted and intrigued at the same time! Needless to say, I eventually succumbed to the power of the mayo with fries! And my waistline is still paying the price ;o)

Oh, yum! When I was in Paris my friends and I had a 'local' around the corner from our hostel, we would go there for lunch and dinner every day because it was so cheap - and got piles of french fries with mayo. I miss it!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, as always.

I also do mayo but also with ketchup, its not that uncommon in Canada but likely due to commonwealth nature.
ReplyDeleteAgreed it cannot be Miracle Whip, it must be mayo.
yummy. enjoy your time there!
ReplyDeletei actually enjoy fries with home made mayo that are usually flavoured...chipotle mayo, garlic mayo, curry mayo, basil mayo...you name it!
ReplyDeleteIs Belgian mayo different from French mayo ? Because I don't like our French mayo... it tastes like eggs or something. I like American mayo way better, even though it shouldn't be called mayonnaise as it has nothing to do with real mayonnaise à la française ;-)
ReplyDeleteI hate mayonnaise until I tried this when I was in Amsterdam. And I haven't found anything like it since!
ReplyDeleteI travel too on my blog! Glad to have found yours.
I just stumbled across your blog and I am LOVING it! I so admire your courage to "drop everything" and follow your dreams and see the world. I think you are both so brave. Thank you for sharing your travels with the blog world, it's making my to-see list even longer!
ReplyDeleteStay Safe!
xx, Brittni
Mmm.. those are one of my favourite reasons to visit Belgium... well those and the waffles! Yum... Belgium is a proverbial smorgasbord of delightful morsels!
ReplyDeleteI too was not a believer until I tried the mayonnaise here (also being from the land of Best Foods & Miracle Whip), but in Europe, it's the best dip ever!
