trotsky

We spent the other day in the Coyoacan area to go to the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera House/Museum. We walked over to the Trotsky Museum that day too. The museum is actually his old residence, where he lived when he was assassinated.

A quick history lesson for those who don't study communism in high school: Trotsky was a Marxist theorist and a Bolshevik revolutionary. Trotsky was deported from the Soviet Union and banned from the Communist Party after opposing Stalin's policies. In exile, he found his way to Mexico City where he lived with his family in a home which he transformed into a secure compound. His paranoia was justified by an attempted assassination and then his subsequent murder, by a soviet agent, with an ice pick, in his study.

- THE BULLET HOLES IN THE WALLS FROM THE MACHINE GUNS WERE HUGE.
Leon Trotsky was buried in the gardens surrounding his home. During the final years of his life, his home had become somewhat of a prison, albeit a beautiful one.

Other travellers we met had gone the day before us and met Trotsky's grandson there, who was wounded in the foot during the first assassination attempt. We decided to visit this museum because of it's proximity to the Kahlo/Rivera home and are glad we did and would absolutely recommend checking it out if you're heading to Mexico City.

ReplyDelete"Oh look, here's a romantic picture of us sitting together on a bench at the gravesite of A GUY WHO GOT MURDERED WITH AN ICEPICK."
ReplyDeleteVery cool museum (did they keep his house as it was? Looks like all kinds of books and shit are out), but kind of a morbid place to take the typical "awwww" bench photo.
Also, when you said "for those who don't study communism in high school," you could have saved a few words and just said "Americans."
The photos are beautiful! And what an incredible place to see!
