i would say take it, if its lightweight and small. when i travel i always take at least two different cameras with me, that way if one gets lost/stolen i know i have the other one (i'm obsessed with taking pictures, so my worst travel fear is losing my camera haha!)
That's fun and I say take it - esp since it sounds like you only have one camera between the two of you! And you showed such restraint with the SLR - it'll make for some great fun pics!
I'm assuming this new camera isn't digital, so the only problem I can forsee is that you'll have to also carry a bunch of film around with you...and if it requires some kind of special film, you'll probably have to buy a bunch of it before you leave, because who knows if it'll be available in ___ country?
The real answer, though, is "the man bought you a thoughtful gift. Don't insult him by returning it."
Sammy! Thanks for coming by our blog so often. Of course I wouldn't return it... it would just go into storage.... but I was leaning towards taking it. It uses regular old 35mm film which should be easy enough to find in most countries.
Take it for sure. The more photos you have from your travels the better! I have made a huge mistake of not taking enough photos when I travel and regret it now.
By the way I am insanely jealous of your upcoming adventure!
When considering what camera to take with me, I settled on the following argument:
If I'm not gonna take a camera on a world trip to take in the fantastic sights, then why the heck own a camera at all?
I say take it... If it gets stolen, then at least it will have served in the meantime, which is more than you can say about it if it stays in storage...
I'd argue the same with the SLR, but I understand the reservation...
TAKE IT!!! As long as you don't become too focused on taking great pictures that you forget to take in the view in front of you. That's what happened to me in Turkey. I was so fixed on taking great shots, and I did, but I went and came back home without feeling like I was actually in Turkey. sooo... ja. :)
Take it. Definitely take it. It's fun to have variety when you're taking pictures. Digital is great because you know you've got "the shot" but film is more of a surprise.
YES YES YES you can and SHOULD definitely take it! Think of all the awesome travel pictures you can take with it! And just think, you can bring it with you certain days and keep it in the car/hotel/hostel/wherever other days...
Take the Camera! You can get some great pictures from it. I agree though, don't let taking great pictures distract your physical eye from taking the sites in. Its light, small and someone said it sounds like you only have one camera so bring this as a second and you can each have a camera! Very nice gift!
