au pied de cochon

Although Alex's attempt to surprise me was foiled, we were both still excited to visit Martin Picard's much-hyped restaurant. I didn't get the infamous foie gras poutine and instead, opted for their duck in a can . I know what you're thinking, but stop being such a snob, it was delicious. The duck is cooked to a perfect medium-rare using the sous-vide method and it's tender and flavorful. Normally, I wouldn't order duck, but the restaurant is known for the dish (amongst others) and I can't pass up a good gimmick. Alex's choice was a melange of fatty goodness. The absolute best part of the night (food-wise) was the cromesquis de foie gras (two little breaded pieces of foie gras that are deep fried). The waiter told us to wait a moment before eating them so as not to burn our tongues. They pop and melt in your mouth and we really wouldn't mind going back and ordering them again.

This place is certainly not for vegetarians. While they do have salads on the menu, seeing an entire pig's head being served to the adjacent table might be enough to put one off of finishing their own meal. In addition to the many well-known dishes that have been raved about on reviews and TV shows, we wanted to try every single appetizer. However, we were warned by friends not to order too much as the fat and salt content of almost everything there is enough to give you an instant heart attack. We paced ourselves and left enough room to share a sugar pie for dessert.  -Mina
