la alcazaba and the roman theatre
• 12 comments •La Alcazba is a military fortress that was built in the 11th century using the remains of an existing Roman fortress. The distinctive building is at the foot of Gibralfaro Castle which on the hillside that overlooks the African coast.
The Roman Theatre sits adjacent to La Alcazaba and was being restored when we were visiting. Despite being 19 meters high and having a radius of 31 meters, the theatre wasn't discovered until 1951! It sat underground and wasn't excavated for so long - apparently, the theatre hasn't been used since the third century.
We felt fortunate to be able to see this in person and were happy to see efforts were being made to preserve the history.
