With a reputation as the world's most dangerous city many locals in Johannesburg are locked in a state of fear. Electrified, fenced compounds are the norm, and casual walks around the neighborhood seems to be a rare event. When you're visiting a foreign city it's always hard to really know if the crime stats are anecdotal or fact based. We walked to, and from, malls in Johannesburg, but (unlike Cape Town) we avoided staying out at night.

The only "sightseeing" we did was in the Gold Reef City area of the city. This area, built on a former goldmine, houses the apartheid museum, a casino, and the Gold Reef City amusement park. Johannesburg itself exists because of the gold trade, 40% of all the gold ever mined on earth was mined in the surrounding area. While we didn't get any pictures of gold, or goldmines, we did enjoy walking around the museum and casino.

Our experience in the city was admittedly limited, but it seemed like the best attractions were outside of Johannesburg itself. For us, Kruger National Park (about 4 hours away) was the prime destination. We really wanted to visit the Cradle of Humankind site as well, but our schedule didn't permit (the campsites at Kruger were fully booked on the weekend).

In the Casino, we were able to enjoy a chocolate chip flapjack supreme (or two) with hot fudge and ice cream from NewsCafe - our favourite chain restaurant that's located in both Cape Town & Johannesburg.

  10. Hi love pictures indeed, its unfortunate that you did not have the best of times in Joburg, it looks like your time was little for you to see the city for what it is.

Joburg is centerpiece of what makes south africa as it is today from social, economical and political. It is the most cosmopolitan african city, it has bad areas around but overall its a great
place I wish you had more time to explore and take pictures of this great place.
